Final Magazine

This is my final front cover, contents page and double page spread. I am very pleased with the outcome of all three of these pages and feel I have learnt alot in the process of making it. Each page has been created using Photoshop and I have acquired many new techniques and abilities from extensively using this piece of software over the past few weeks

Contents Page Construction

For the first stage of my construction I created the effect of a ripped piece of paper, I did this literally by ripping a piece of paper and scanning it onto the computer. In the top left I added the IPC Media logo followed by some contact information. Underneath this I placed a picture of my (not yet completed) front cover and a recycle logo at the bottom. On the main part of page I added a two large red boxes reading 'let's go mental' using the warp tool and various rubber tools on Photoshop I created a 'worn' effect. At the bottom of the page I 'recycled' a previous attempt at a double page spread and turned it into a poster. Again using the warp tool, I edited a red box too make it look more interesting and added the words FREE! and HUGE POSTER! in a separate black box below it. At the top of the page I added a black box reading 'Contents, what's inside...' I got this idea from Kerrang! and remade it myself in an original way.
For the next stage of my contents page I added two more images of features of my magazine, a picture of my already completed double page spread and an album cover of my own personal band. I used the same effect as used previously for created page numbers and page description. On the left hand side I added the completed version on my front page and editors notes. I moved the contents box slightly to the left to make room for the magazine logo which I intend to add.
For the final step of my construction I added an image of the editor and a signature. On the left I completed this section with the magazine logo and a short piece of text which talks about the main article advertised on the front page.

Double Page Spread Construction

My double page spread was created before the contents page as I wanted a picture of it to feature in the contents
For the stage of my construction I added the main image for the article. I edited the image by altering the brightness and contrast and again, adding stubble. I did the same for the slightly smaller image in the bottom right hand corner. I added a textured background which I created on Photoshop. Around this I also wrote out my article which fits around the image in the bottom right corner.
For the next step of my construction I added the main line which features explicit language. I spent many hours on the box around it to make it look worn with the paint splatter effect. To do this I download a paint splatter font from dafont and used certain letters as a mask tool to delete areas from the box. I used a similar effect on the box below it.
For the final step of my double page construction I added a screenshot of a tweet mentioned in the article which I created a entirely new Twitter account for in the name of the artist featured in the article. As a border I created glowing circles round the edges of the page. To do this I created many circles and just added a soft outer glow around them. In the top left I added the magazine logo which features on every page.

Photoshoot 4

This was the final photoshoot I did and was a re shoot for my double page as the photo I used was too dark However these photos were not particularly good quality so I ended up only using one in the bottom corner of my double page. I ended up using the same image as I did before and managed to make it brighter on Photoshop

Photoshoot 3

This photoshoot was taken for my double page and front cover. It was shot outside for natural lighting and most photos were taken from a high angle

Doube Page Spread Attempt

This was my original double page, however much like my front cover it was not at all like a double page you would see in a magazine such as Kerrang! I made the image grey scale at the beginning meaning I could not change it later on. This made problems automatically as the entire page lacked any colour apart from in the text. The text looked very plain and was too large. The positioning of the artist meant that he would get folded in half when the page was made into two.

Front Page Construction

For stage one of my construction I added my main image which fills up the entire page. Using Photoshop I used the mask tool to make my model a separate layer to the background. By doing this I was able to make the background grey scale and put the main focus on the artist. I used the curves tool to manipulate the brightness and contrast on the image and bring out colours and facial features. I added a tattoo to the neck and a slight stubble to my artist as well. I used the mask tool again to darken my models colour, add I blonde streak and also change the eye colour to bring them out slightly as the photo was quite dark. The final edit I did to my model was add an earring to fit the rock theme. At the top of the page I added my masthead and a selling line giving some information about what is inside the magazine. At the bottom of the page I added the magazine tagline and a bar code.

For the next stage of my magazine I added in the name of the band. I did this by creating black rectangle shape across the page with white outlines to add clarity. For the band name I used a very basic thick bold font so the text was easy to read. Next to the band name I added a small amount of text to fill space. On the left hand side of this I created a circle with the magazine logo in it. On one side of the magazine I added a 'plus' section which I will later fill with images of artists. On the other side I added some band/artists name to show what else is featured in the magazine
In the final stage of my magazine I had to move the masthead over to the left to make for the 'free CD' box. I completed the plus box by adding three close up shots of different artists. Underneath the band name I added a quote. Each word I separated and added a box underneath too make it look broken up an disjointed. In the bottom left hand corner I added a paint splatter effect with some band names over the top followed by 'hottest tour ever'.

Front Cover Attempt

This was my first at a front cover however I later realized it was not effect or appropriate to fit the style of a rock magazine. The facial expression is incorrect when referring to the codes and conventions needed for a music magazine. I kept many of the ideas used in this front cover for my final piece however with a more appealing image with better positioning (head overlapping masthead).

Photoshoot 2

This photoshoot was for my front cover. It was shot in front of a brick wall to give quite a plain background so the main focus would be on the actor. This worked effectively and the photos worked well

Photoshoot 1

This photoshoot was shot in front of a greenscreen so any background could be used later on. These photos did not fit the style of my magazine after editing however I may use a few in my contents page/double page spread
